The Two Big Questions
Before diagnosing a brown lawn, answer two questions: Is the browning uniform across the entire lawn, or are there distinct patches? And what type of grass do you have? The answers narrow the diagnosis dramatically.
- Uniform browning across the whole lawn: Usually drought stress or natural dormancy (cool-season grasses in summer heat).

Cause 1: Drought Stress
The most common cause of summer browning. When grass does not receive enough water, it conserves energy by going dormant -- blades turn brown but the crown and roots stay alive.

- Grass blades fold inward lengthwise (the earliest sign)
- Footprints remain visible after walking across the lawn
- Color shifts from green to blue-gray before turning brown
- Browning is uniform, not patchy
Fix
Water deeply -- 1 to 1.5 inches per week, delivered in 2-3 sessions. Water early morning (5-9 AM). Place a tuna can on the lawn to measure output. Cause 2: Heat Dormancy (Cool-Season Grasses)
If you have Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, or perennial ryegrass, browning in July and August is often natural dormancy. When soil temperatures consistently exceed 65-70 degrees and air temperatures stay above 85 degrees, these grasses shut down top growth to protect their root systems.
Fix
Raise your mowing height to 3.5-4 inches. Reduce foot traffic on the lawn. Water lightly (0.5 inch per week) to keep crowns alive if you want faster recovery when temperatures drop. Cause 3: Fungal Disease
Fungal diseases create distinct patterns that differentiate them from drought:

Fix

Cause 4: Grub Damage
White grubs (larvae of Japanese beetles, June bugs, and European chafers) feed on grass roots below the surface. Grub damage typically appears in late summer (August-September) as irregular brown patches.

- Brown patches that pull up like carpet -- the roots have been eaten
- Spongy feel underfoot in affected areas
- Increased bird, skunk, or raccoon activity digging in the lawn (they are eating grubs)

Fix

Fix

Cause 6: Pet Urine

Fix

Will my brown lawn come back?
